Cocktail Recipes

Here is a selection of delicious cocktails designed to work with our spirits.  Some are classic gin recipes; others are in a more contemporary style for your enjoyment, and there are some delicious options for hot beverages as well. 

GIN COCKTAIL

Classic Cape Dry G&T

Classic Cape Dry G&T
A refreshing and timeless cocktail, made the classic way, with lots of ice and our favourite Indian tonic, garnished with lemon zest and a sprig of rosemary
Ingredients

50ml Deep South Cape Dry Gin
200ml Indian Tonic (low sugar if you prefer)
Twist of thinly peeled lemon zest
Sprig of fresh rosemary
Juniper Berries (optional)

To make

Pour gin over ice in a Copa or Ballon glass. 
Add Indian tonic to taste (don’t drown the gin!)   
Bruise rosemary and stir into drink, leaving it in the glass.
Garnish with twist of lemon zest and sprinkle 3-4 juniper berries

GIN COCKTAIL

Deep Southside

Deep Southside (Gin Mojito)

A little tired of the ol’ G&T and looking for something a little more wickedly tropical – a gin-based mojito, with mint, sugar syrup and crushed lime for gin-with-a-difference

Ingredients

50ml Cape Dry gin
½ fresh lime, diced
6-8 fresh mint leaves
25ml simple sugar syrup

To make

Muddle the lime pieces, sugar syrup and the mint leaves in a shaker.
Add gin and ice, and shake.
Strain into martini glass
Garnish with a slapped mint leaf and a wheel of fresh lime.

Variation: For a Dirty Southside, empty the contents of the shaker into a tall glass, mint and crushed lime included, top up with soda and ice.

[Simple Syrup:  Mix 250g of sugar, 250ml water and ½ tsp lemon juice in a saucepan. Simmer (not boil) for 5 minutes, cool and store in fridge for up to 2 weeks]

Classic Dragonfly

Classic Dragonfly
The classic gin and ginger ale cocktail lifted with a hint of lime wedge and gingery herbal rosemary notes.
Ingredients

50ml Cape Dry Gin
200ml ginger ale
2 Lime wedges
Optional: Sprig of fresh rosemary

To make

Pour gin into a glass with 3-4 blocks of ice. 
Squeeze juice of one lime wedge into glass and top up with ginger ale.
Garnish with second wedge of lime and the rosemary.

Gin Bluebird

Gin Bluebird
A beautiful, refreshing gin cocktail with spice and blueberries.  A sweet cocktail, perfectly  lightened with the grapefruit garnish. Catches the eye at every party!
Ingredients

50ml Cape Dry Gin
200ml Fitch & Leedes Blueberry and Cardamom tonic
Slice of sweet ruby grapefruit
1 T fresh blueberries

To make

Pour gin into glass over  3-4 blocks of ice.
Add blueberries, and pour in blueberry tonic
Garnish with a slice of ruby grapefruit

GIN COCKTAIL

Classic Gin Martini

Classic Gin Martini

The iconic gin cocktail, made with just a touch of dry vermouth, and perfect spiral of lemon zest. For best results this drink should be served very chilled, in chilled glasses.

Ingredients

50ml Deep Cape Dry Gin
15ml Dry Vermouth
Lemon zest spiral
2-3 savoury olives
Orange bitters (optional)

To make

Place martini glasses into the freezer for 10 minutes.  Prepare your garnishes up front.
Slowly pour gin and vermouth into a shaker filled with lots of very cold ice (not melting!).
Stir (or shake!) and pour into a very well chilled martini glass
Add freshly peeled spiral of lemon zest
Add olives (or a splash of orange bitters )

Vanilla Fig Gin Fizz

Vanilla Fig Gin Fizz

Ever wondered what to do with fresh ripe figs?  This cocktail perfectly matches the flavours of our Cape Dry gin, fresh ripe fig and a touch of vanilla and mint.  

Ingredients

50ml Deep South Cape Dry Gin
100ml Soda Water
Two slices Ripe Fig
1 tsp Vanilla Syrup* (or to taste)
Mint to garnish
Vanilla Pod (Optional)

To make

Pour gin over ice in cocktail glass.
Drizzle vanilla syrup over top
Stir to dissolve syrup
Add ripe fig slices and soda water to taste
Stir gently to infuse fig flavours
Garnish with mint and/or Vanilla pod

Ruby Hibiscus G&T

Ruby Hibiscus G&T
Our signature pink G&T: Ruby Gin with hibiscus tonic beautifully complemented by sweet orange and herby thyme.
Ingredients

50ml Deep South Ruby Gin
200ml Barker & Quin Hibiscus tonic
Slice of sweet ripe orange
Sprig of fresh garden thyme

To make

Pour gin over ice
Add chilled hibiscus tonic
Garnish with slice of orange and float a generous sprig of thyme on top

GIN COCKTAIL

Ruby Valentine G&T

Ruby Valentine G&T
Unashamedly romantic, this is a floral pink gin cocktail with Deep South Ruby Gin.  Use your favourite flavoured tonic enhanced with fresh strawberries and rose petals.
Ingredients

50ml Deep South Ruby Gin
200ml rose, hibiscus or elderflower tonic
2-3 fresh sweet strawberries, halved
Dried or fresh rose petals (or other edible blossoms)

To make

Add cut strawberries to glass, and crush them very slightly.
Add 3-4 blocks of ice. pour in gin, and top up with your favourite flavoured tonic
Garnish with a pinch of dried rose petals or float a fresh petal or two from edible flowers

Pomegranate Dragonfly

A little spicy, a little sweet and a little pink and very refreshing: Deep South Ruby Gin with ginger ale, pomegranate and mint
Ingredients

50ml Deep South Ruby Gin
200ml ginger ale
1 T of pomegranate seed
Sprig of mint

To make

Add pomegranate to glass containing  3-4 blocks of ice
Pour in gin, and top up with ginger ale, giving it a quick stir to lift pomegranate.
Garnish with fresh mint

Watermelon Gin Smash

Watermelon Gin Smash

A beautifully refreshing summer gin cocktail with fresh watermelon, lemon juice and mint

Ingredients

50ml Deep South Ruby Gin
75ml (half a cup) of pulped, seedless watermelon
25ml simple syrup
100ml club soda
2 lime slices and a sprig of mint

To make

Pour gin into glass with 3-4 ice cubes, and stir in crushed watermelon. 
Add soda to taste.  
Garnish with 2 lime slices and a sprig of mint

Pineapple Basil Gin Smash

Pineapple Basil Gin Smash

A taste explosion of Gin, pineapple, basil and lime, topped up with fizzy soda.

Ingredients

50ml Deep Cape Dry Gin
75ml (half a cup) of fresh pineapple , crushed and juiced
Juice of ¼ lime
25ml simple syrup (optional)
100ml club soda
3 basil leaves, rolled and cut into strips
Lime wedge or slice of kiwi fruit to garnish

To make

Muddle basil and lime in a glass. 
Add pineapple juice, gin and 3-4 ice cubes.
Top up with club soda and stir.
Garnish with lime wedge, kiwi fruit and the sprig of basil  

VODKA COCKTAIL

Chilli Bloody Mary

Chilli Bloody Mary
 
A wonderfully spicy version of the Bloody Mary, this delicious cocktail has just the right amount of bite from the chilli, with authentic chilli flavours blending with the rich tomato base.
Ingredients

25ml Deep South Chilli Vodka
200ml Tomato Juice  (we favour All Gold)
Slice of Lemon
Sals and pepper to taste

To make

Pour Chilli Vodka into glass containing  3-4 blocks of ice
Top up with tomato juice, giving it a thorough stir to blend in the vodka that has floated to the top.
Drop in slice of lemon
Sprinkle with rock salt and fresh ground pepper if you like.  
(There is no need to add any other condiments such as Tabasco or Worcester Sauce.)  

Get creative with other garnishes
-  a sprinkle of ground biltong (Bloody Maria?)
-  scattering of ground coriander with a few coriander leaves
-  crumbled smoked oysters or mussels

WINTER WAMER

Chilli Vodka Hot Chocolate

Chilli Vodka Hot Chocolate

A winter-warming drink with a spectacular choc/chilli blend. Will definitely leave you in a good mood with a warm felling in your chest!

Ingredients

20ml (half a tot) Deep South Chilli Vodka
Your favourite hot chocolate powder - the premier the better (we like Nomu) 
Hot water/hot milk to taste (50:50 is good, or load up on the milk for a creamier drink)
Toasted baby marshmallows to top

To make

Pre-warm a hot beverage glass or mug
Add 4-5 teaspoons of chocolate powder to the glass

Add the Deep South Chilli Vodka and hot water. Stir to blend until there are no lumps. 
Top up with hot milk
Top with Marshmallows (slightly toasted with chefs blowtorch if you have)

Getting creative with your garnishes...
- Pile with whipped cream topped with shavings of dark orange chocolate
- Sprinkle with cinnamon spice and insert a stick of cinnamon
- Sprinkle with crushed ginger biscuit crumbs (have a gingerbread man one the side for Xmas)

WINTER WARMER

Steves Gin Hot Toddy

Steves Gin Hot Toddy

The ultimate winter fireside drink,  this lemony, spicy hot drink will conjure up memories of childhood, but with an adult zing from the gin. Make a batch and enjoy with your friends at a mid-winter braai!

Ingredients

50ml Deep Cape Dry Gin
40 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice (approximately half a lemon)
40ml of light honey 
Dash of orange or Angostura Bitters (optional)
Slice of fresh ginger
3 cloves
Stick of Cinnamon
1 Star Anise/ 3 All spice (optional)
Slice of orange or lemon
Boiling water

To make

Pour gin, lemon juice and honey into a warmed glass
(If ingredients are cold, pop them into the microwave for 15 seconds)
Add dry spices and ginger (the longer these infuse, the more intense the flavour)
Add boiling water to taste. Stir very well.
Add splash of bitters and drop in a half slice of orange or lemon
