A potent flavour explosion of Amber Rum, Citrus Gin, lime juice, aromatic bitters and ginger beer, our version of this classic drink is a guaranteed pick-me-up!

Allegedly created in Egypt at the Shepheard’s Hotel by bartender Joe Scialom, the Suffering Bastard cocktail is a cocktail with big flavours.  Requested to make a hangover remedy for the allied troops that frequented his bar, he complied and according to legend created this cocktail as a “cure” for all the suffering soldiers that complained about the poor quality of alcohol in the area.

Originally made with bourbon, many versions now exist.  Here is our take on this great recipe, using aromatic rum and bitters.

Ingredients

  • 25ml Deep South Three Citrus Gin
  • 25ml Deep South Amber Rum
  • 12ml fresh lime juice
  • 2 dashes Deep South Aromatic Bitters
  • 150 ml Ginger Beer
  • Orange slice and mint
  • Ice cubes

To make

  1. Fill an old fashioned glass with ice cubes.
  2. Add gin, rum, lime juice and bitters.
  3. Top up with ginger beer.
  4. Garnish with slice of orange and mint.

Variations:  Use ginger ale instead of ginger beer for a sweeter cocktail.  Or  go the other way and pep it up with a slice of fresh ginger floated on the top!
